Oracles

An oracle is a service that supplies real-world data to smart contracts on blockchain networks, enabling automated trading without intermediaries. Oracles fetch external information such as currency exchange rates, commodity prices, or stock indices and feed it into smart contracts, which execute automatically when predefined conditions are met.

There are two primary types of oracles: centralized oracles, operated by a single entity, and decentralized oracles, which source data from multiple providers. Because smart contracts execute based on the data oracles provide, data accuracy is critical—inaccurate information can lead to substantial losses. Decentralized oracles reduce the risk of manipulation by distributing data collection across many sources, though this approach requires careful coordination.

Oracles are most relevant to traders using blockchain-based trading platforms or decentralized finance protocols. For traditional forex traders, oracles are less directly applicable, but understanding how they work is useful for those exploring cryptocurrency-related trading strategies.
