Swiss National Bank (SNB)

The Swiss National Bank (SNB) is Switzerland's central bank, responsible for managing monetary policy and issuing the Swiss Franc (CHF). As the country's primary monetary authority, the SNB aims to maintain price stability and support Switzerland's economic objectives.

The SNB influences currency and credit markets through several mechanisms. It sets interest rates to control inflation and economic activity, occasionally intervenes in foreign exchange markets to stabilize the CHF, and oversees banking regulation to ensure financial system stability. The bank is known for a conservative approach to monetary policy, prioritizing long-term stability over short-term stimulus.

For forex traders, SNB decisions matter significantly. Interest rate changes announced at policy meetings directly affect CHF exchange rates and forex volatility. When the SNB signals monetary tightening or easing, traders adjust positions in CHF pairs (EUR/CHF, USD/CHF, GBP/CHF). SNB interventions in the FX market, though infrequent, can produce sharp currency movements, making policy statements and economic data from Switzerland important to monitor.

Understanding SNB policy helps traders anticipate CHF trends and manage exposure to Swiss currency risk. Economic indicators from Switzerland—inflation, employment, GDP—feed SNB decision-making and warrant close attention in trading calendars.
