Reversal

A reversal is a point where a currency pair's price trend stops and moves in the opposite direction. It marks the end of one price movement and the beginning of another. Recognizing reversals is crucial for traders because they create opportunities to enter new trends or exit trades at significant turning points.

How reversals work

After an extended move in one direction, price momentum weakens as supply or demand imbalances shift. The prevailing trend exhausts. At this pivot point, new trading pressure emerges and price begins moving the opposite way. Reversals can take hours, days, or weeks to fully develop.

Common reversal patterns

  • Head and Shoulders: a peak-valley-peak formation that signals an established trend is losing strength.
  • Double Top and Double Bottom: price tests the same level twice before reversing, showing resistance to continuing the trend.
  • Engulfing Candlestick: a larger candlestick fully contains the previous one, suggesting a shift in momentum.
  • Hammer and Shooting Star: single-bar patterns that can indicate potential turning points.

Why reversals matter for trading

Reversals present entry and exit opportunities. Traders who identify them early can profit from the start of a new trend. However, false signals occur—incomplete patterns that fail to develop into full reversals. Successful traders combine reversal patterns with other technical factors, volume confirmation, and broader market context before executing trades.
