Brokers Offering Fixed Spread Accounts

These brokers quote a fixed spread on at least part of their range: a cost known before entry that does not widen when liquidity thins. The certainty is real, and it is not free.

What fixed actually means

A fixed spread is set by the broker rather than derived from the underlying market. On EUR/USD it might be two pips at every hour of every day, where a floating spread on the same pair moves between 0.1 and several pips depending on liquidity.

The broker takes on the variability. When the underlying spread is 0.2 pips, the broker keeps the difference; when it blows out to four pips during a release, the broker absorbs the loss. Over time the fixed number has to sit above the average floating cost, or the arrangement would not survive — which is the price of the certainty.

Who genuinely benefits

  • Traders with a small, fixed profit target. A method aiming for ten pips cannot absorb a spread that occasionally becomes five. Knowing the cost before entry is what makes the arithmetic work.
  • Anyone trading around scheduled news. The window where floating spreads are worst is exactly where a fixed spread is worth most.
  • Traders in thin hours. A method that runs during the rollover or in the quiet Asian session pays widened floating spreads routinely; the fixed number does not move.
  • New traders learning to size positions. One fewer variable while the basics are being established has real value, even if it is not the cheapest arrangement.

The conditions under which it stops being fixed

This is the part that needs reading, because "fixed" is almost never unconditional. The client agreement will describe circumstances in which the broker may widen — typically abnormal market conditions, low liquidity, or around specific announcements. Some brokers state a maximum widening; others reserve discretion.

The practical question is not whether such a clause exists — it does at every firm — but how specific it is. A clause naming defined conditions with a stated ceiling is a different product from one that permits widening at the broker's discretion whenever it judges conditions abnormal.

  • Find the clause before opening, not after.
  • Check whether requotes are the mechanism used instead of widening — a fixed spread account under instant execution can decline your order rather than widen the price.
  • Check whether stops and limits carry a minimum distance from the market, which is more common on fixed-spread accounts.
  • Look for whether the fixed pricing applies to the whole instrument list or only to a handful of majors.

Fixed against floating, honestly

Over a large number of trades placed in liquid hours, a floating spread is usually cheaper. That is the straightforward case and it is why most active traders end up there.

The comparison changes when the trading is concentrated in the hours and events where floating spreads are worst, or when the strategy's edge is small enough that an occasional five-pip entry cost destroys it. Under those conditions the fixed account is not merely more comfortable; it is arithmetically better.

Settle it with your own record rather than with a rule: take your last hundred entries, note the hour of each, and price them both ways.

What else tends to travel with fixed pricing

Fixed-spread accounts are often paired with instant execution, a minimum stop distance, and sometimes a restriction on very short-term strategies. None of these are universal, and none are hidden — they are in the specification and the agreement. But they cluster, and a trader choosing fixed pricing for the certainty should check that the accompanying terms do not undo the benefit for their particular method.

Frequently asked questions

  • Is a fixed spread more expensive than a floating one?

On average, usually yes — the fixed number must sit above the average floating cost for the broker to absorb the variability. It is cheaper when your trading is concentrated in the hours and events where floating spreads widen.

  • Can a fixed spread widen?

Under the conditions the client agreement names — commonly abnormal market conditions or low liquidity. Every firm has such a clause; what differs is whether it is specific with a stated ceiling or fully discretionary.

  • Do fixed spread accounts requote?

Often, because they tend to run instant execution. Where the broker cannot honour the fixed price it may decline the order rather than widen it, so a requote is the mechanism the certainty is paid for with.

  • Are fixed spreads good for scalping?

The known entry cost helps, but fixed-spread accounts frequently carry a minimum stop distance and sometimes restrictions on very short holding periods. Check the specification before assuming the pricing suits the method.
