The Republic of Seychelles matters to forex traders less as a market than as a licence. Its Financial Services Authority issues the Securities Dealer Licence that a substantial part of the retail industry uses to serve clients outside Europe — often as a sister company to a European entity, with clients routed by country of residence.
What a Seychelles licence means
A Securities Dealer must hold minimum capital, appoint two directors and a resident compliance officer, file audited accounts and pass a fit-and-proper assessment of its beneficial owners. Client funds must be held separately from the firm's own. The FSA publishes enforcement notices and has revoked licences, so this is supervision rather than a rubber stamp.
What it does not include is a leverage cap, mandatory negative balance protection, client classification, suitability testing or an investor compensation scheme. Brokers licensed here routinely advertise 500:1 and above, and that figure reflects the absence of a limit rather than a judgement about the client.
Trading from Seychelles
Residents can open accounts with international brokers in the ordinary way. The domestic market is small and there is no local retail forex industry to speak of, so the practical choice is the same global list available elsewhere, weighed on the same criteria.
What to check before depositing
Read the client agreement rather than the homepage. A group that shows an FCA or CySEC licence in its footer may still contract with you through the Seychelles company, and the protections differ completely between the two. Confirm the entity name against the FSA register, then confirm the same name appears on your deposit instruction.
