Velocity of Money

Velocity of money measures how quickly money circulates through an economy—the average number of times a unit of currency changes hands for goods and services in a given period. It is calculated as Gross Domestic Product (GDP) divided by the total money supply.

What Velocity of Money Signals

High velocity indicates an active economy with robust spending and investment. Low velocity suggests money is sitting idle, reflecting economic sluggishness or reduced business activity. A rising velocity often precedes inflation, as faster money circulation can push prices upward.

Why Forex Traders Monitor It

For currency traders, velocity of money signals economic health. A rising velocity typically supports currency strength, as growing economic activity attracts foreign investment and increases demand for the domestic currency. Conversely, falling velocity can weaken a currency, reflecting declining economic vigor.

Central banks closely watch velocity when setting interest rates and monetary policy. Since currency values often shift when central banks adjust policy based on velocity trends, it is an important indicator for timing forex positions.
