Trader Workstation (TWS) is the desktop platform built by Interactive Brokers for its own clients. Unlike the white-label platforms elsewhere on this site, it is not licensed to other brokers — it is the front end of one firm's multi-asset brokerage, and it is designed for professional use rather than for a first live account.
What it covers
TWS trades stocks, options, futures, spot forex, bonds, funds and metals from a single margin account, on exchanges across dozens of countries. That breadth is the point: a position in a currency pair, an index future and an equity option sit in the same account under one margin calculation, which is not something a dedicated forex terminal can offer.
The learning curve
TWS presents its complexity openly. Order types run well beyond market and limit into algorithmic and conditional structures, the workspace is built from configurable windows rather than a fixed layout, and market data for exchange-traded products requires separate subscriptions the user must enable. A trader arriving from MetaTrader should expect to spend real time on configuration before the platform becomes comfortable.
Automation and API
Interactive Brokers exposes a documented API with client libraries in several languages, alongside FIX access for higher-volume clients. This is genuine programmatic access to a multi-asset brokerage rather than a scripting language bolted onto a chart, and it is why quantitative traders and small funds use the platform.
Alternatives within the same account
IBKR also offers a web platform and mobile apps with a reduced feature set, which many clients use for monitoring while running TWS for execution. The account is the same; only the interface differs.
Who it suits
TWS suits multi-asset and systematic traders who want low costs and broad market access and are willing to invest in learning the platform. A trader who only trades currency pairs and wants a familiar chart-and-ticket interface will find MetaTrader or cTrader a faster route to the same trade.
