Armenia differs from most of its neighbours in a way worth knowing: it has a functioning domestic licensing regime that covers firms offering margin trading, administered by the Central Bank of Armenia.
The regime
The central bank combines monetary policy with supervision of the whole financial sector — banks, credit organisations, insurers and investment companies. Investment companies may be licensed to deal in financial instruments, including on a margined basis, subject to capital requirements, client-money rules, conduct standards and reporting.
The register is public, and a licensed Armenian investment company is a supervised entity with a domestic regulator that can be complained to — materially different from an offshore-licensed firm reachable only through its own jurisdiction's courts. The list is short, which is itself informative.
What it does not include
There is no compensation scheme of the FSCS or EU type standing behind client money at an investment company, so segregation and supervision are the protections. And the regime does not reach offshore firms marketing into Armenia, which are outside it entirely.
The dram
The Armenian dram floats with central bank smoothing. It has been sensitive to regional developments — trade and remittance links with Russia are substantial, and flows have shifted sharply in response to events since 2022, at times appreciating the currency in ways local analysis had not predicted. It is another case where capital and remittance flows dominated the variables a textbook would emphasise.
Practical points
Armenia's relatively open financial system and its position as a destination for regional relocation have made account opening and cross-border transfers comparatively accessible, though banks apply source-of-funds checks that have tightened.
Cautions
Regional schemes promising fixed returns circulate here as elsewhere, often through personal networks. A guaranteed monthly percentage is not a trading result, and commission for recruiting others identifies a pyramid regardless of the product named.
Checks
Search the Central Bank of Armenia's register of licensed investment companies, and verify any foreign broker on the register of the regulator that issued its licence.
