Oman supervises its capital market through the Financial Services Authority, formerly the Capital Market Authority, with the Central Bank of Oman responsible for banking and the exchange rate.
The peg and what it costs
The Omani rial has been fixed to the US dollar since 1986 at an unchanged rate, and it is one of the highest-valued currency units in the world — an artefact of where the rate was set, not a measure of economic strength.
The peg's real significance is what it removes. Oman has no independent monetary policy: the central bank follows the Federal Reserve, raising rates when the Fed raises them regardless of domestic conditions. When oil prices fell sharply in 2014–16 and again in 2020, Oman — with smaller reserves than Saudi Arabia, Kuwait or the UAE — came under genuine pressure, and forward markets at times priced a devaluation probability. The peg held, supported by borrowing, fiscal consolidation and regional support.
For a currency trader, the general point is that a peg's credibility depends on the reserves and fiscal capacity behind it, not on the arrangement's age, and the Gulf pegs differ considerably from each other in that respect even though they look identical on a chart.
Retail trading
There is no domestic licensing framework for retail leveraged CFD brokers. Residents who trade use foreign firms, so the licensing jurisdiction's rules and compensation arrangements apply entirely, and the FSA has no jurisdiction over a foreign broker. It does publish warnings about unlicensed solicitation, and the region attracts a great deal of it.
Islamic accounts
Swap-free accounts are widely offered. The questions worth asking are whether interest is genuinely avoided or merely deferred, whether the status expires after a period, and how the broker recovers the foregone revenue.
Cautions
Guaranteed-return schemes circulate throughout the Gulf, often through personal networks. A guaranteed monthly percentage is not something trading produces.
Checks
Verify any broker on the register of the regulator that licensed it, on that regulator's own website.
