Estonia supervises financial firms through Finantsinspektsioon. The domestic brokerage sector is small, so most traders use EEA firms passporting in under MiFID II, and the country's distinguishing feature is its tax design.

The investment account

Estonia allows a resident to designate an investeerimiskonto, an ordinary bank account nominated for investment purposes. Money moved into it is recorded as a contribution, and tax falls due only when withdrawals exceed contributions. Gains realised inside the system can be reinvested indefinitely without triggering a liability.

For a trader who compounds rather than draws income, this is materially better than a regime taxing each realised gain, because the tax that would have been paid stays invested. The constraints are that the arrangement covers defined financial assets acquired through defined channels, and that every movement in and out must be recorded correctly — the system is an accounting discipline as much as a tax relief. Whether leveraged CFDs with a foreign broker qualify needs checking against the current rules rather than assumed.

Trading conditions

The ESMA measures apply in full: 30:1 on major currency pairs, 20:1 on minors, gold and major indices, 10:1 on other commodities, 5:1 on shares, 2:1 on cryptocurrencies, with negative balance protection, margin close-out at 50%, no bonuses and mandatory disclosure of retail loss rates. Binary options are banned for retail clients.

A note on Estonian licences

Estonia became a popular jurisdiction for crypto-asset service providers, then revoked a large number of those authorisations after tightening its requirements. That episode concerned crypto licensing, not investment firm authorisation, but it produced a lasting lesson: a licence obtained cheaply in a jurisdiction actively reviewing its own standards is not a durable protection. Verify what a firm is actually authorised to do, and when the authorisation was last confirmed.

Compensation

Clients of Estonian-authorised firms fall under the domestic investor protection sectoral fund. Where a broker passports in, its home state's scheme applies — commonly the €20,000 Cypriot ICF.

Checks

Finantsinspektsioon publishes a register of supervised entities and of firms operating cross-border, plus warnings about unauthorised providers. Confirm the entity name from your client agreement.
