Latvia restructured its financial supervision in 2023, merging the former Financial and Capital Market Commission into the Bank of Latvia, which now licenses and supervises investment firms alongside its central banking functions. Older references to the FKTK describe an authority that no longer exists.

Why the supervision was rebuilt

Latvia had developed a large non-resident banking sector, and in 2018 the country's third-largest bank collapsed within weeks of a US Treasury finding that proposed cutting it off from dollar clearing over money-laundering concerns. The episode ended that business model and forced a comprehensive overhaul of anti-money-laundering supervision, which Latvia carried out under international scrutiny.

For a trader the relevance is direct. Latvia now applies source-of-funds and identity checks with unusual rigour, and account opening or a large withdrawal may involve more documentation than in neighbouring markets. That is a feature of the reforms, not an obstruction, and having documents ready shortens it considerably.

Trading conditions

The ESMA product intervention applies unchanged: 30:1 on major currency pairs, 20:1 on minors, gold and major indices, 10:1 on other commodities, 5:1 on individual shares, 2:1 on cryptocurrencies, with negative balance protection, margin close-out at 50%, a ban on bonuses and mandatory disclosure of each broker's retail loss rate. Binary options may not be sold to retail clients.

Compensation

Clients of Latvian-authorised investment firms are covered by the domestic investor protection scheme up to a statutory limit. Most brokers serving the market passport in from elsewhere in the EEA, which substitutes the licensing state's scheme — typically the €20,000 Cypriot fund. The entity named on your account agreement decides this.

Tax

Latvia taxes capital gains at a defined rate with periodic declaration obligations, and a foreign broker provides no reporting to the Latvian authorities. The resident calculates and declares, converting each transaction correctly. Confirm the current rate and filing frequency with a Latvian accountant.

Checks

The Bank of Latvia publishes registers of licensed and passporting firms and maintains warnings about unauthorised providers.
