Brokers Whose Platforms Show Market Depth

These brokers run platforms that expose a depth-of-market panel — cTrader, MetaTrader 5, jForex and similar. Seeing quantities behind each price is what turns position sizing from an assumption into a measurement.

What a depth panel actually shows

A retail platform normally displays one bid and one ask, which encourages the belief that a price exists independently of size. It does not. Every quote is good for a certain quantity, and an order larger than that quantity fills against successively worse prices until it is complete.

A depth-of-market panel makes that visible: a ladder of price levels with the quantity available at each. It answers the question a single quote cannot — how large an order this price can actually absorb.

Why it matters to a retail trader

  • Sizing against real liquidity. For most retail positions on major pairs, available depth is far larger than the order and the panel confirms it. The value appears on thin instruments and in thin hours, where the same order walks several levels.
  • Reading the rollover and the news window. Liquidity is withdrawn before scheduled releases and around the daily rollover. Watching the ladder empty is a more direct signal than watching the spread widen after the fact.
  • Understanding your own fills. An order that filled several pips from the screen price has usually consumed the only liquidity there. The panel turns that from a suspicion about the broker into an observation about the book.

What it does not prove

A depth panel is not evidence that orders reach an external venue. Where a broker aggregates external liquidity, the ladder reflects real quantities from real providers. Where a broker quotes its own book, the panel shows what that broker is willing to trade at each level, which is useful information but a different thing.

Execution policy is stated in the client agreement and evidenced by fill quality over time. No panel settles it, and a broker's platform choice implies nothing about how it handles flow.

Which platforms expose it

  • cTrader presents depth as a standard part of the interface rather than an optional panel — it is the platform built around the idea.
  • MetaTrader 5 includes a depth-of-market window, off by default, that a broker must enable and populate. On some MT5 accounts it shows nothing at all.
  • jForex, Trader Workstation, NinjaTrader and similar professional clients expose full ladders as a matter of course.
  • MetaTrader 4 has no equivalent, which is one of the few structural gaps between the two MetaTrader versions.

Availability therefore follows the platform, not the broker's marketing. A broker offering MT5 may or may not have enabled depth on it, and that is worth checking in a demo before assuming.

How to use it without over-reading it

The disciplined use is narrow and worth stating, because a ladder invites over-interpretation. Check available depth before sizing an order larger than usual. Watch it thin before a scheduled release rather than trading into the release and wondering afterwards. Record the difference between your average fill and the screen price, and let that record set the size at which you start working orders rather than sending them whole.

What it should not be used for is short-term prediction. Quantities on a ladder appear and disappear continuously, much of it is not resting intent, and reading direction from it is a full-time discipline rather than a retail technique.

Checking it before you rely on it

  • Open a demo on the platform and enable the depth panel — it is hidden by default on most clients.
  • Confirm it populates with real quantities rather than a placeholder ladder.
  • Watch it on your instrument at the hour you trade, and again during the rollover.
  • Compare a filled order's average price against the ladder as it stood beforehand.

Frequently asked questions

  • Does a depth panel mean my orders reach the market?

No. It shows quantities at price levels, which may come from aggregated external liquidity or from the broker's own book. Execution policy is a separate question answered in the client agreement.

  • Why is my MT5 depth window empty?

Because the broker has not enabled or populated it. Depth in MetaTrader 5 depends on the broker feeding it; the window exists on every MT5 build regardless.

  • Can I see market depth on MT4?

No. MetaTrader 4 has no depth-of-market feature, which is one of the genuine structural differences between the two MetaTrader versions.

  • Is depth useful for retail position sizes?

On major pairs in liquid hours, rarely — available depth far exceeds the order. It becomes useful on thin instruments, in thin hours, and for anyone whose size has grown enough to walk the book.
