Risk Management

Risk management is the set of strategies and techniques used to protect your trading capital while pursuing profitable returns. It is the most important skill separating successful traders from those who lose money, because no matter how accurate your trade analysis is, poor risk management can wipe out your account.

Core Risk Management Techniques

Position sizing is the foundation: never risk more than 1–2% of your account balance on a single trade. This ensures that even a series of losses will not destroy your capital.

Stop-loss orders are automatic exit points that close a losing trade at a predetermined price. They prevent a small loss from turning into a catastrophic one by removing the temptation to hold a losing position hoping it will recover.

Diversification spreads your risk across multiple currency pairs or trading instruments rather than concentrating all your capital into one trade. This reduces the impact of a single bad move.

Risk-reward ratio compares the amount you stand to lose against the amount you could gain on a trade. A minimum of 1:2 (risking $100 to make $200) ensures your winning trades outpace your losses over time.

Assess Your Risk Tolerance

Risk tolerance is the amount of loss you can emotionally and financially withstand. Be honest about it—trading with money you cannot afford to lose leads to panic decisions and poor discipline.

Common Mistakes

Traders often abandon their risk management plans during winning streaks (overconfidence), ignore stop-loss orders hoping for a reversal, overtrade out of greed, or make emotional decisions driven by fear or excitement. These behaviours are the primary reasons traders fail, even when their trade setups are sound.
